Knowing about Carrageenan

What is carrageenan? Carrageenan seems to be an unfamiliar word. Not many people know about it. But now, you are going to know what carrageenan is and what it is for. Carrageenan is the fiber derived from red seaweed. It seems that it is a natural plant which could become a natural ingredient for something which you could use.

The clarification of the different between carrageenan and poligeenan


Carrageenan may sound similar to poligeenan and you will think that they are related. Carrageenan is known as the native carrageenan or “food-grade” carrageenan is extracted from seaweed. The process uses a hot water. The fact about carrageenan is that the molecular weight averages 200,000 to 400,000 daltons. Then, it has been repeatedly tested and reviewed over decades. It has been deemed safe consistently by agencies, such as the U.S Food and Drug Administration, the E.U. Scientific Committee on Food, and the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and World Health Organization. Then, the Joint FAO/World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) concluded that the use of the carrageenan in infant formula posed no concern. The statement was published in 2014. It was concluded from the seventh times research since 1970 which assessing the full body of research on carrageenan. The researchers said that it is safe as a food additive for those more vulnerable, such as babies.

On the other hands, poligeenan is the “degraded” form of carrageenan. It starts as carrageenan, but it undergoes an aggressive chemical process which includes strong acids and high temperature over an extended period of time. Poligeenan is carcinogenic which is related to the inflammatory bowel disease. It is used as the component in the X-ray imagine. It could diagnose product as not food or cosmetic in X-Ray imaging.
